Looking for a way to influence elementary school culture about mathematics prompted this author's use of graph-coloring problems in an activity with second graders.

Nicholas H. Wasserman,, teaches graduate mathematics and education courses as an assistant professor of mathematics education at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City. Although he primarily works with secondary teachers and currently serves as an editor for the Delving Deeper department of NCTM's Mathematics Teacher, his two elementary-school-age daughters have also immersed him in thinking about mathematics at the elementary school level.
