I have found the story of the Haktaks and their magic pot to be a very meaningful way to introduce third through fifth graders to the idea of a rule, or function, and how to express one algebraically. Although this can be a difficult topic for elementary students to understand because of the “developmental nature of mathematical skills,” when topics are introduced in meaningful ways, even young students can understand and use them successfully (Carraher et al. 2006).
