In this month's Problem Solvers Solutions, readers have a window into students' number and operation sense in the early elementary grades. Second and third graders were presented with problem-solving tasks using a hundred chart consisting of two number cards and a challenge card aligned to an addition or subtraction structure. Drawing on the structure of the hundred chart and prior knowledge, students were able to articulate their solution strategies.

This article introduces a task designed around SMP 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively and encourages students to move between decontextualizing and contextualizing as they work toward solutions. Each month, elementary school teachers are presented with a problem along with suggested instructional notes and asked to use the problem in their own classrooms and report solutions, strategies, reflections, and misconceptions to the journal audience.

Each month, this section of the Problem Solvers department showcases students' in-depth thinking and discusses the classroom results of using problems presented in previous issues of Teaching Children Mathematics. In this month's Problem Solvers Solutions, readers gain a window into students' algebraic reasoning in the early elementary school grades. First graders received a design made of square and triangular tiles as well as the total cost of the tiles needed to make the design. By determining the various cost combinations for the square and triangular tiles, students were able to articulate how a change in the cost of the triangular tile affected the cost of the square tile.
