Building number sense with Lego® robots

Lego Mindstorms™ robotics quickly draws children in and provides ample opportunities for engaging them in robust mathematical learning. Two introductory programming tasks empower children to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to build number sense in a fun, engaging learning environment. Contributors to the iSTEM (Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) department share ideas and activities that stimulate student interest in the integrated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in K–grade 6 classrooms. Krista Francis, kfrancis@ucalgary.ca, is an assistant professor and IOSTEM Director at the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary in Canada. Encouraging both in-service and preservice elementary school teachers to teach science and mathematics joyfully and expertly with great tasks is one of her delights.

Michael Poscente, mdposcen@ucalgary.ca, is finishing his MSc in the Low Frequency Lab Centre for Bioengineering and Research at the University of Calgary. He started programming robots in junior high school and now passionately shares his robotics knowledge with teachers and children.
