This department publishes brief news articles, announcements and guest editorials on current mathematics education issues that stimulate the interest of TCM readers and cause them to think about an issue or consider a specific viewpoint about some aspect of mathematics education.

Matthew R. Larson, mrl@lps.org, is the K–grade 12 curriculum specialist for mathematics for the Lincoln Public Schools in Nebraska. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of NCTM, an author of professional books and textbooks, and has a particular interest in the application of research to problems of practice.

Steven Leinwand, sleinwand@air.org, is Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, DC, where he supports a range of mathematics education initiatives and research. He has written professional books and textbooks, is a past president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and has served on the NCTM Board of Directors.
